The Small Harbour Development Unit was added to PMTE in 2015. No new public harbours have been built since the 1950s. There are currently 12 proclaimed fishing harbours within the Western Cape as well as about 55 unproclaimed harbours along the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal.
